Densitometer: The Ultimate Guide

Table of Contents

It can be pretty stressful.

Assessing images with too many dark spots can take out the joy of quality assessment and analysis. Sometimes having a tool to determine the level of contrast and brightness of the film can help restore the confidence for any inspector. Fortunately, a densitometer is one of such tools that assist in measuring film darkness and brightness especially for non-destructive testing that requires quality images for accurate analysis. This article gives you all the information you need to understand how a densitometer works.

I. What is a Densitometer in Radiography?

This equipment calculates the magnitude of darkness of a translucent object or an introspective material. This tool essentially produces light that is directed towards a sensor or photoelectric cell that calculates the thickness of a test material when centered in between the sensor and the light’s origin.

Contemporary densitometers are designed with a few parts such as the electronic integrated circuits that aid precise and accurate readings.

II. What is the Working Principle of the Densitometer?

6. Densitometer

The working principle of a densitometer can sometimes depend on the model of densitometer you possess, as there are some models with the black and white features as well as the colored feature. This factor allows the reading of a black and white thickness or a colored thickness via reflective and transmissive modes on the tool.

The densitometer is switched on, and the object it is required to measure is selected. Then the film material for testing is placed in between the sensitometer and the light. Finally, the reading is displayed on an analog display screen.

III. Features of Densitometer

A densitometer has three major types which include the transmission densitometer, reflective densitometer, and scanning densitometer.

The features of the densitometer include the dot gain, the dot area, ink trapping, integrated circuitry, anti-shock panel, ABS housing, and LED lighting source.

IV. What are the Advantages of Densitometer?

The advantages of a densitometer include:

  • A densitometer can be calibrated seamlessly via the in-built calibration software
  • It is equipped with twenty-seven LED luminous feature which has been placed to replace ballasts
  • To avoid dust falling into the light hole, a tape can be used to cover the light hole
  • Easy adjustments of the potentiometer at the bottom of the densitometer for irregular measurement due to the aging of the instrument.

V. What are the Applications of the Densitometer?

Densitometers are applicable in varying sectors, some of these sectors and industries include

  • Printing professionals – for the measurement of color saturation in the graphic and printing arts business
  • Non-destructive testing such as the evaluation of concrete thickness or density in construction and slurry particle concentrations in mining.
  • Finally, they are applicable as well in the calibration of printing tools and machines.

VI. How do you Calibrate the Densitometer?

3. Densitometer

The densitometer has an in-built calibration software, but to execute the calibration of the equipment the following two-easy steps must be performed

Firstly, the densitometer must be adjusted to a zero value after the initial preparations for the calibration are concluded. then the ‘Cal’ button must be pressed down for about two seconds and automatic recalibration commences.

VII. How to Use Densitometer?

The densitometer is first switched on, and the measuring display panel can be set to the zero value. Then the material or object is placed in between the sensitometer and the light source for the densitometer to evaluate.

Conclusively, different types and models allow the densitometer to evaluate different types of the film substrate.

Conclusion

In a nutshell, a densitometer is deployed in some non-destructive testing to ascertain the level of brightness as quality images used in the accurate analysis depends on it. It is also applicable in many industries including construction and printing industries making it a very essential tool.

Furthermore, the equipment is built with features that make calibration a lot effortless and advantageous to users by manually adjusting the potentiometer in a situation where irregular measurements are noticed.
